Physics 195 Homework 2019

Because I am letting you use either the 13th edition or the 14th edition of the text book, I will assign homework problems that appear in both editions. These won’t always have the same number. For example, problem 1.74 in the 13th ed. is 1.66 in the 14th ed. Therefore the numbering scheme for individual problems will be “edition.chapter.problem”, e.g. 13.1.74 or 14.1.66. For lists of problems the nomenclature will be “Ch. xx- [E13: p1, p2, p3]; [E14: p1′, p2′, p3′]”, e.g. Ch. 1- [E13: 56, 72, 88]; [E14: 52, 64, 78].

Problems marked with a * differ from one edition to the other in one or more numerical values. The solution goes through the same steps so they are effectively the same problem even if the numerical answer is different. Let me know if you think there is a typo in any assignment.

There are three types of problem: regular, quiz, and challenge. Regular problems will be turned in and graded according to the syllabus. Quiz problems will be used for the weekly quizzes. Challenge problems are specially challenging problems for your own enjoyment/edification. Your text also has “Discussion Questions”. I do not assign these but you may find it helpful to look them over and try to answer a few that catch your fancy. The answers to Discussion Questions do not need to be turned in.
